Long-Standing, Numerous Contributions to APA

I echo the many APA members who endorse Melba Vasquez for APA President and write of her knowledge and creative leadership, and long-standing, numerous contributions to APA.

As a writer, colleague, and mentor, Melba has worked tirelessly for decades to broaden the scope of psychological knowledge and, importantly, the diversity of who we are as psychologists as well as whom we serve. I admire Melba for the ways that she reaches out to bring together those who have different viewpoints, for the way she listens so carefully and works to solve problems collaboratively.

In addition, Melba will serve APA well as President because she is one of those remarkable people who can articulate clearly to the public and policy makers the varied contributions that psychology makes to people’s well-being. Her leadership as President will help us, as professionals in many roles, serve the broader society by working together to address today’s social challenges.

Judith Van Hoorn, Ph.D.
APA Council Representative and Past President,
Division 48: Peace Psychology

Skillful and Effective Leadership

For over two decades Melba Vasquez has been my colleague and good friend. We have co-authored books and served on committees together. I know her well. She has demonstrated skillful and effective leadership in chairing APA committees and task-forces, in serving as president of different APA divisions and a state psychological association, and in doing the hard work of shepherding difficult projects to successful conclusions. Her many awards attest to her wide range of accomplishments. She is a psychologist of impressive integrity, courage, persistence, and wisdom. She is dedicated to APA, its goals and values, and her background and strengths are well matched to the challenges that APA faces. I believe she will be an excellent president of the American Psychological Association. Please give her your #1 vote!

Ken Pope, Ph.D., ABPP

Consummate Scientist-Practitioner: Advancing All of Psychology

Melba Vasquez's knowledge of APA and psychology in the larger world has developed over many years of service to APA as a professional organization. Her leadership experience within APA has been extensive and crossed all four directorates (practice, education & training, science, and public interest) . She is a consummate scientist-practitioner having been successful in independent practice for many years while also being a substantial contributor to the professional literature. Her public interest and diversity credentials are impeccable. Her roots in education and training are strong having served as a Training Director in a large accredited internship and publishing a major textbook on professional ethics. Her commitment to advance ALL of psychology and her strong leadership skills & experiences make her our BEST choice for our next APA President.

Melba Vasquez has made significant contributions to the field of psychology through her scholarly research, organizational expertise, and proven leadership experience. She has boundless creative energy, and is committed to practice. She is a strong voice for psychology and I heartily endorse her and support her candidacy for President of APA.

A Consummate Leader

As a consummate leader in our profession, Dr. Melba Vasquez takes her warm generous spirit and interpersonal skills and deftly applies them as easily in building coalitions as in repairing schisms while never losing sight of the values and vision of the groups she represents. I can think of no better role model, mentor, teacher, healer, and leader to represent us all as President of the APA.

Cynthia de las Fuentes, PhD
Past President, Division 35

Voice of Calm, Reason and Openness

Melba Vasquez is that extraordinary combination; a visionary leader who is also an effective one, a person who can chair an important meeting to its successful conclusion and also contribute to the development of theory and practice in psychology. Melba has been a voice of calm, reason, and openness in turbulent times and places, making her more than suited to lead APA during this period of change. I'm thrilled to have the chance to vote for her for APA President.

Ethically Centered Leadership

Dr. Vasquez is a leader who has used her knowledge of ethics to guide her decision making on a personal and systemic level. Consequently she is often ahead of the curve on helping psychologists do what is right, even if doing so is difficult. Through her many roles in APA and other psychological associations she has consistently been a model for psychologists fulfilling the promise of our aspirations. As psychologists and the country face harsh economic times, Dr. Vasquez is uniquely qualified and capable of providing ethically centered leadership.

Edward Delgado-Romero, Ph.D.

Exemplary Leadership

Melba Vasquez has a long history of exemplary leadership in diverse areas of APA governance, state psychological associations and in the provision of education and training about the practice of psychology. Her service to our association has been visionary and she has demonstrated time and again a capacity to bring people of disparate perspectives and backgrounds together to solve problems. Give Melba your #1 vote for APA President!

Universal Respect

I have known Melba Vasquez for about 20 years through various APA committees, and on Council.  She is a very smart, articulate and courageous psychologist.  She has written or co-authored a number of articles and books on ethics which have established standards in the field.  Dr. Vasquez has worked very hard on APA cultural diversity, but has also had  a strong influence on other issues, including private practice psychology.  She enjoys almost  universal respect among her APA colleagues, and is a genuinely nice and helpful person.  I would urge your vote for her in the upcoming election.

William E. Foote, Ph.D., ABPP

No One is Better Fit for APA President

Melba Vasquez is a leader who elegantly brings together diverse viewpoints and constituencies. As an independently practicing clinician, forensic consultant, respected author and member of APA governance, she has demonstrated her excellence in everything she pursues. No one is a better fit for APA President!

Martin H. Williams, Ph.D.
Fellow, American Psychological Association
Past Member at Large, Division 42

Right Person at the Right Time

Melba Vasquez spends every day of her life respecting those who disagree with her, defending those whose voices are unpopular, showing kindness to those who do not reciprocate. She understands the fundamental interconnectedness of science, training, and practice. Melba is the right person at the right time to be our president.

Linda Campbell, Ph.D.
Council Representative, Division 29, Psychotherapy and Professor,

A Uniting Force

Melba Vasquez is the embodiment of APA’s vision—a uniting force, catalyst, resource, innovator, advocate, leader, and champion. With her at the helm, APA has a real chance of living out the true meaning of its creed as the 21st century voice of psychology. It is an honor to endorse her and a privilege to vote for her.

Great Respect for Melba Vasquez

I have great respect for Melba Vasquez’ diversity of knowledge, skills, understanding, and action. I have known her as an educator, clinician, author, running friend, and engaged activist on behalf of APA. She has brought to each role her integrity, warmth, compassion, clear thinking, grounding in scholarly research, ethical centeredness, energy, creative purpose in action, and multicultural vision. She will be an inspired President of APA. It is an honor to endorse her and a privilege to vote for her.

Kate F. Hays, Ph.D., C.Psych.

A Dedicated Psychologist with Vast Experience

Melba Vasquez is a scientist-practitioner, a published scholar, a dedicated psychologist with vast experience in governing within organized psychology (including 9 years on Council, 3 years on the Board of Directors, and past president of two APA divisions). She is a fair-minded, even-handed, and caring professional who creatively solves problems in ways that benefit all involved. APA and all of its members need the continued excellence of Melba Vasquez's leadership, integrity, and passion on behalf of APA and psychology.

Carole Rayburn, Fellow, APA

Melba Vasquez is the Renaissance Woman Psychologist

I have had the pleasure of serving with Melba on the APA Ethics Committee, and on Council, of learning from her at Workshops, and relating to her as colleague and friend. Melba Vasquez is the Renaissance Woman Psychologist.... a theorist, a practitioner, an ethicist, a leader par excellence, powerful, sensitive, supportive. collaborative - someone who can be counted on to act wisely and responsibly as she represents all of us as President.

Utmost Esteem and Respect

I hope this note conveys the utmost esteem and respect I have for Dr. Melba Vasquez for her numerous contributions to scholarly research, training and education, public interest issues, and professional leadership. I had an opportunity to work with her and find her to be a strong, committed, and inclusive leader. I am honored to endorse a most deserving candidate for the APA President-elect.

Trailblazing Psychologist in Professional Leadership

Melba Vasquez, Ph.D., ABPP is a trailblazing psychologist in professional leadership. At the local and national levels, Dr. Vasquez has often been the “first” or only voice to represent the concerns of those who had no voice at the time, including veterans, women, and racial/ethnic minorities. Advocacy for social justice has always been a guiding principle in her career. She has served in many administrative roles in the American Psychological Association at the division and board levels. In each of these roles, her service has been marked by compassion, empathy, a cool head in the face of turmoil, and the capacity to bring people together and help them to see multiple view points. Her leadership has been unselfish—as an independent practitioner, she might easily have been too busy to volunteer her services to better the profession, but she was not; she might easily have been too busy to mentor the large numbers of upcoming psychologists who sought her guidance, but she somehow always managed to find time for them. Dr. Vasquez is a psychologist with a heart and she knows how to use it to promote the betterment of others. I will be giving her my #1 vote when I receive the presidential election ballot and I hope you will too.

Past President,
Society of Counseling Psychology
